Impacts on Society

Downtown Toronto (Cvetanov, 2010.)

  • When polyester was first introduced around the late 1950’s (in mostly the form of clothing), it was criticized harshly mainly by the media, because knowing it was a synthetic fiber, it was judged as a “cheap” and “uncomfortable”.
  •  It later on regained popularity during the 1970’s for its wide range of uses, and eventually became a household name.

  •  Polyester is not only non absorbent, but it can be used to create fiberfill insulation, making it a preferred choice for recreational gear and wear such as:
  • climbing suits
  • parkas
  • sleeping bags
  • tents
  • fishing nets
  • Fiberfill insulation is a synthetic lightweight fiber used as insulation for things such as clothing.

The durability of this tent will keep it's campers warm and dry. (Hatake, 2009.)

Since Polyester is recyclable, it has been widely advertised and encouraged as a greener option to consumers.
